This Fall semester, students from diverse countries came together through IVECA’s virtual classroom, igniting a rich exchange of cultural knowledge and personal stories. Before starting their main group projects, students have been engaged with each other by introducing themselves to their global peers, reflecting a deep enthusiasm for intercultural learning. Their excitement is noticeable, not only for the prospect of learning about new cultures but for the opportunity to form meaningful connections.

Students shared their unique cultural insights through introductions, sparking curiosity and bridging geographical divides. As part of their engagement, they exchanged recommendations for books, video games, movies, and cultural programs, deepening the intercultural dialogue and overall growth. A Chinese student shared, “It's truly an honor to be here, and I am looking forward to connecting with everyone and contributing to our collective growth.” Similarly, a Korean student reflected, “I am very happy to connect with you through the IVECA program, and it is a pleasure to get to know you. I think you are curious about Korea and us, and I am also very curious about you, Indian culture, and the country itself. We hope that this program will be a valuable experience where you can share each other's cultures and gain a broader perspective on the world."

Indian students also expressed their eagerness to explore beyond their cultural boundaries. One student shared, “I am excited to embark on this journey with IVECA, eager to explore, grow, and discover. With an open heart and a curious mind, I look forward to enriching experiences and meaningful connections that will shape our time together.”

Another layer of cultural exchange unfolded through media and storytelling. A Korean student discussed their experience with Indian culture, saying, “I've had a few experiences with Indian culture. I loved watching the movie Three Idiots, and recently, I watched a Korean program about traveling in India, which was really interesting. I would love it if you could tell me more about India! I’m excited to share our cultures with each other, and I can’t wait to meet you soon.”

While highlighting the students’ interest in each other's cultures, this exchange underscored the power of media in fostering a deeper understanding of different lifestyles and traditions. Mexican students shared pictures and videos of Día de Muertos, a celebration that honors the memory of deceased loved ones with vibrant altars, colorful decorations, and traditional foods. Meanwhile, American students shared their experiences with Halloween, showcasing the festive spirit of this annual celebration. Through these exchanges, students could explore similarities and differences in their seasonal traditions, building connections and broadening their appreciation of global customs.

By stepping into each other’s cultural worlds throughout this ongoing fall semester, students have gained not only knowledge but a newfound respect for diverse viewpoints and the joy of learning together, transcending borders. This experience demonstrates the meaningful impact of intercultural exchange in guiding students toward building global citizenship, instilling a sense of interconnectedness and shared human values.

As we celebrate United Nations Day, it’s an opportunity to reflect on the shared goals that unite people and organizations across the world. The United Nations Day is not just a day of commemoration; it’s a reminder of the importance of fostering understanding, dialogue, and partnerships across borders. IVECA’s mission of promoting intercultural competence, empathy, and global leadership perfectly aligns with the UN’s vision of a more peaceful, just, and inclusive world.

Our special consultative status with the UN ECOSOC and association with the UN-DGC strengthen our commitment to fostering these values in the leaders of tomorrow. By participating in IVECA’s programs, students become more than just informed individuals; they become advocates for positive change, equipped with the skills and knowledge to contribute to the United Nations' global vision.

At IVECA, we believe that educating students about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is essential to building a better future for all. These 17 interconnected goals serve as a blueprint for global development and the promotion of peace and equity. By integrating the SDGs into our curriculum, we provide students not only with knowledge but also with the tools and mindsets they need to become responsible global citizens.

Through interactive virtual exchanges and collaborative projects, students from different countries come together to learn and address real-world challenges based on the SDGs, internalizing the importance of international cooperation and peacebuilding for it. This collaborative, intercultural approach helps students develop the empathy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills necessary to create innovative solutions for today’s global issues. Empowered to take meaningful actions in their local contexts while maintaining a global perspective toward the SDGs, students learn how small actions can lead to large-scale, positive change. This approach mirrors the UN’s belief that sustainable development is only achievable when people across the globe work together, respecting and learning from each other’s experiences.

As we look forward to celebrating this UN Day, we reaffirm our commitment to educating the next generation of global leaders. Creating a more sustainable and equitable future begins in the classroom, with students who are prepared to tackle the pressing challenges facing our world. Our mission of cultivating global citizens is, in essence, a commitment to the values that the United Nations upholds.

Together with our partners and the students, we strive to ensure that the goals of the UN are not only met but exceeded, with each of our students contributing to a world that is more just, peaceful, and united.

This fall, over 30 classes from China, India, Korea, Mexico, Peru and the USA have come together to create a rich and diverse learning environment, allowing their students to have meaningful intercultural dialogue. To ensure a smooth and impactful start to the semester, participating teachers have undergone Teacher Professional Development sessions where they were introduced to IVECA’s core principles, the virtual classroom’s diverse features, and the global teaching and learning structure. Teachers were also guided to the necessary tools and strategies to effectively engage their students in cross-cultural exchanges, and they shared their motivation for joining IVECA, educational missions, and areas of interest.

In particular, we were delighted to have new school partners, such as a school on the West Coast of the United States, in Oregon. The new participants embrace the IVECA program with enthusiasm, recognizing how seamlessly it aligns with their curricula and mission. Both IVECA and the school are committed to fostering global citizenship and intercultural awareness, emphasizing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to empower students to address real-world challenges from diverse perspectives. The school teachers shared that their focus on place-based learning and local impact mirrors IVECA’s goal of connecting students to global issues while fostering responsibility within their communities.

Building on this shared vision of global citizenship and community engagement, the semester’s activities explore a wide range of topics, with a strong emphasis on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Key subjects include the influence of ancient civilizations on the modern globalized world, the power of storytelling, the challenges of climate change and air pollution across different nations, and the legal issues surrounding decision-making through artificial intelligence.

IVECA remains dedicated to its mission, working closely with teachers to create an environment where students can learn and connect with peers worldwide, exchange cultural insights, develop a global perspective, and contribute positively to both their local and international communities. One teacher from India expressed, "I’m very thrilled and very excited to be part of such a great initiative where of course [our teachers and students] are going to learn a lot, and there will be loads of cultural exchange! Let’s appreciate the fact that we are part of such a beautiful community."
